EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
