Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of characters who will split off from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

First, the party understands precisely where to head next after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the foes for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the group reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Questers and Planners parties.

Audiences can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
